'79 CDV: 425 out 500 in!

Great job Bruce! I also would like to see more pictures especally where you cut for the headers and how they fit. Did you have to move the break lines on the right hand side frame rail?

Keep up the great work! And the detail is just right; you can't have too much.

On the header fit, using the Sanderson CAD600 headers, the only area of any need for relief was the control arm bushing as stated. Did have to bend the trans cooler lines so they wouldn't make contact, but no problem with any brake lines. I was looking for contact with the alignment shim bolts but they were about an inch clear, no problem.

I wounder why Sanderson made the drivers side header so much shorter than the passenger side( pass side almost looks like full length header) looks like there is alot of room to extend it and curve it out a little more. Did have to use their funky angled collector adapter to swing away from the oil pan on the driver's side, but put a straight reducer on it after grinding on it to fit to straighten out the angle. Pass side just ditched the Sanderson angled reducer and went with straight reducer, nice even flowing look.

Installed new radiator today, have a few issues, guess when measurements are taken it depends on where you are measuring from and to where. Was suppose to be the same height as stock but seems to be 1"-1 1/2" higher, it's ok but left a gap at top of radiator shroud and no way will I have some radiator showing through there. I'll have to figure out a way to fill the gap and keep the stock look, should be able to find so old shrouds or like material in a yard run, have some other parts on my list. Sometimes you just feel a urge for a yard run, no telling what you might find, it could be something you actually NEED!

Do need to solve air cleaner fitment, can't use stock one I have Holley carb with center mount needle seat adjs and will most likely need a base that will drop down for hood clearence. Have been working with a 17" junk yard set up, dimpled it for 2 clearence bumps for the carb, don't like the top though. It angle/flares to about 13-14", want to get a decal set made with something like Super Duty/HO on the top and maybe 465 HP/ 590 ft# on the bottom then put them on the air cleaner like some of the GM muscle cars came with, think they would fit better if the top had the full 17" radius, an item to look for on the yard run. Need to get out there in the AM-Monday ,it hasn't rained for 2 days so the mud/standing water wouldn't be so deep and it's easier to see the floaters. Will take some pics of install progress per requests.

Bruce,

Hey Bruce,

Did you have to cut both bolts on the passenger side A-Arm or just the front one for clearance? Does anyone know if both have to be cut if using stock 472/500 exhaust manifolds in a 77-79 deville/fleetwood? Thanks - Justin

Nice project Bruce, wanna see some pics of that beautiful engine in your car!
Dont you think you could use a set of chrome pulleys and brackets?

Dwayne

Dwayne thanks for suggestion, but want to stay with stock look, also one less thing to shell out bucks for.
Your car is looking fantastic, I feel like a strip from Peanuts a long to ago when Linus brought copies of the Dead Sea Scrolls that he made with aged paper, burnt edges, and script using the original style to show and tell at school, when the teacher asked Charlie Brown what he brought he replied his little red fire engine but added he'll just forget about it now! But I still like mine, will think about a little step to higher detail.

Have a few pics with engine in, need to work on lighting technique some more.

Bruce,

Made yard run today got parts to fill radiator shroud gap and some more parts for air cleaner options.

Need to fill about 1" gap on top of fan shroud about 1 1/2" on sides, bought commercial/limo radiator thought it was only thicker not bigger all the way around, guess it depends on how you measure..... a few pics.

Trying to make a dual snorkle ram air type air cleaner, have picked up alot of odds and ends(definitely odd and not sure which end they go on) and will have alot of parts left over, one good thing they didn't cost alot.

Need to get carb on and hood reinstalled so I know just exactly how much clearence I have. :dunce: Then see what can be made. a pic of the parts I got today to add to what I already have, wish they have a right and left for some of there take offs/adapters. :irked:

Bruce, If it were mine, I would pull the radiator, paint it flat black, maybe find some coating that is commercially available and applicable at home (CalGuard ? for motorcycle exhausts, cases, oil coolers, its heat sheding). Basic black is always "in".
Also, how much lower than the transmission sump is the engine sump?

Looks good, get it driveable before the snows, John.

Eastwood.com has a black radiator paint in a can. The paint is a bit thinner and won't clog the radiator. Plus it's a high heat paint. Works very well!

"EZ"

John/EZ thanks for suggestions for radiator, am painting the side tanks black to blend in. But still making filler strips to cover gaps, got them finished today and after installing radiator/shroud tomorrow will put them in.

John, the pan slump is about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4" lower than trans pan, but the trans pan is about 2" lower than stock pan, hell I might go broke putting the extra oil/trans fluid needed. :screwy:

Got alot of parts to make air cleaner set up but seems like I may have had my head up my --- thinking about making a dual pickup set up. I didn't give much thought into where the pass side inlet could be placed until I got some parts that could work but no place to mount when I actually worked on it instead of thinking about it, looks like my recon work was weak or nonexistant. :dunce: No place to go except battery compartment, cannot go round it with offset out-dead end area for air, no room by radiator either. Maybe something under bumper, like Olds 442 did on one of their options, looks like it could turn out to be single outlet the way things are going, that would be ok.

I did find 17"base with top set, think it can off a Ford/Merc something. :yikes: Was just laying on the ground like alot of the stuff I've been getting lately or in a trunk, looked like crap but cleaned up ok and will prime/paint up great. Has relief base and clears the Holley float adj nuts and flatter top-better for decals. Will work on some more layout possibilities tomorrow. A little close to getting the BBSOB running.

Bruce,

Spent most of today working on air cleaner system, found way to locate 2 inlets- one in the original factory area on driver's side and the other above the battery on the pass' side. I got 2 flat wide air cleaners on the yard run,( pics above) had thought they might work for the hook ups to the air cleaner body but they didn't work out there. After rethinking the inlet location problem, I cut the wide flat inlet sections off the air cleaner bodies and used them for the outside air inlets.

Had a box full of nice OEM ribbed rubber (sounds like some kind of condom/prophylactic) ducts and was able to come up with a combo that looks pretty good. Started cutting everything to make it work, alot of relocation on the main body to do and fill ins on the intake bodies, will take a few pics of the different layouts/mods, ran out of daylight tonight . 2 pics of main body layout.

How about if you flip the one on the right over? Then it'll look more like the one pn the left.

"EZ"

EZ, thanks for interest, but I've worked on about as many combinations as one can do with what I have. Have come up with this arrangement, it seems to work given all the constraints imposed and the idea of keeping this looking as close to what a factory set up might have be from that period.

Should have all the metal work done Sunday and maybe painted, kinda wet around here must have rained 3"+ the past 2-3 days.

Man I went to the Goodguys car show in Charlotte, NC. at the Lowes Motor Speedway a couple weeks ago. They had a HUGE swap meet area. I saw several dual snorkle air cleaner housings and I thought of you every time. Maybe you should go to a swap meet. The dual snorkle housings look to be fairly common there.

Good luck!

I like what your doing to the coupe. the bucket seat is something i thought about , I like the way buick reveria gs 71-73 look with the buckets and center console.

when your done please keep that monster out of tacoma :eyepopping: I don't think i want to accidently run up on you thinking your all stock. you will hurt my rep.

I have a 79 coupe with 1969 472 , #5 cam, large valves ,stock posi rear-end

lookin good :D

'79--, good to hear there are more '79 CDV's running around, in state too, how bout' that. :cloud9:

Don't worry about running into me in Tacoma, I will never ever let any of my cars set foot(or tires) in Tacoma! :mischievous:

No, Tacoma's ok, was there a few months ago at Delta Cams getting the base circle checked out on a cam I had. Took my other '79 CDV for a little run, hadn't been out for awhile.

Hope you find a bucket seat/console combo that works out, alot of options just have to find one that works for you.

Just happen to have pic of the other '79.
