'79 CDV: 425 out 500 in!

Nice car, damm I'm starting to like these old hoggs more and more, like the old timers say - when a hogg was a real hogg and not some down sized POS!

Is this how it goes, you start looking/thinking about the next car even before you get the one you're working on done. :yikes: Does this sound like some other situation? :screwy:

Hope this urge passes soon, I don't have the energy or funds to do another car.

Bruce,

I like the yellow one too. here is a picture of my 79 coupe (tacoma sleeper) :D

Ya know, those bucket seats look awesome in that '67 Deville. Maybe I ought to think about doing that with mine. That's pretty cool. What kind of seats did you say that was out of? And the console?

Bid is up to $10.1K and reserve is not met :eyepopping: ; here is his description of the interior:

Interior- I had some fun here, it all looks factory but the front seats are 1964 GTO buckets that I had recovered with the stock type pattern & material. I also had the back seat redone at the time. A real interior guy did the carpet; this was not a $100. Pre form job. I also added a 1972 Chevelle center console and staple shifter, placed in the middle of that is a Cadillac emblem (these parts were purchased new old stock, they are not old beat up parts. The speedometer area was all redone to make look new. The gauges are rare early 1970’s Sun Blue line gauges including Tach, Water Temp and oil pressure. The stereo system was updated with new speakers and amplifiers for better sound quality. Again pictures don’t do the interior justice.
When he talked about the 67 having a TH350, I began to wonder if he really knew what he was talking about. Still, the interior looks pretty cool...almost factory; again minus the aftermarket gauges.

Yeah, he didn't know his stuff about the transmission but the interior looks killer.

Guess I'll have to find something else besides '64 GTO seats. Good Lowered could he pick
anything more expensive? Or hard to find? :cursing:

Got the mock up done for the air system I've been working on, will go with this for now. But will start looking at some aftermarket systems/parts with the idea for more flexible ducts, can't use the 4 cross tie rods with this set up. They put them in there for a reason, but the cowl mount point can't hold that much weight/force.

Maybe I should have just used 2 Cadillac take offs and ducts like Bugzapper did on his project. :scratchchin: Sometimes you make something more complicated than it needs to be. :irked: Guess I can look for another takeoff and duct(still have stock parts) and air cleaner base/top- you can have more than one set up or maybe it takes a few tries before you get what you're looking for.

O.K. .... Looks good .... Fire it up .... Wanna hear it run .... Snows a comin' .... You wouldn't drive it in the snow would you? .... Got the video cam, Right? .... I'm just impatient .... Hurrrry :yikes:

Can't wait, I KNOW it will be nice, John

Does the inlet air swirl in the opposite direction if the car is in the southern hemisphere?

Seriously, really looks stock in a hipo sort of way. Do you have stickers for the lid?
Something like "Cadillac High Performance 500 H.P." or something else factory appearing.

Some one said recently that living vicariously can be a bitch. This one will be worth the wait.
Actually, all the builds have been great.

John

Stick with that set-up it looks good and I'll bet there is not another one like it!

Doc,

I Like it!! Darn thing looks "factory" Hi Po. Your attention to detail is refreshing. Just don't expect me to follow that good example.

Slap-it-together,
d

Thanks for the kind words, who was it that said I live on the kindness of strangers.

John, living it in real time has been a bitch at times too! Alway seems to be one more thing to do or something you didn't anticipate.

Went back to the junk yard today, :yikes: a different yard then the Pull a Part, they had removed most of the older cars and filled the place up with Cash for Clunkers cars, the only thing was there didn't seem to be any REAL clunkers there, what an unbelievable bunch of BS :cursing: saw alot of cars that were better than alot of people I know drive, 3 Infinity Q 45's that I couldn't see anything wrong with then. Someone once said some ideas are so ridiculous that only an intelectual could have them, looks like this can be said about our rulling class.

Anyway back to the car, found a few parts off cars I hadn't looked at before, some of the GM Chevy Surbs, pick ups, vans have some nice 4" ducts but think they are too large, will have to check. Found a base take off that is the opposite hand of the ones I used, have modified one and will install it in the same orientation as the drive's side( as I looked at the set up I know Ford or Merc had a set up like this- maybe off the 430 Merc engine in the 50's-60's-2 intake outlets at a weird angle) :scratchchin: Still need to find the first plastic fitting in the opposite hand.

Also been working on the breather/PVC hook ups. Didn't want to put any holes on the top of the cast valve covers, so have been trying to come up with something. But then again with the ducts, cross braces, and other hoses, wires, maybe you wouldn't see the full top view anyway. Guess I'm guilty of overthinking some of this stuff at times.

I know though if I don't do some of this stuff now it will never get done. It will just turn into something that you will put off or think about doing down the road but something else will come up or you wouldn't be up mentally or physically for the task. I'll look at and say it'd be nice to do but I can live with it for now.

I have a video camera that I haven't used much, but I have dial up and not sure how long it would take to upload something, :irked: will do some test clips in the next few days so I know WTF I'm doing when the time comes to tape something really important or earthshaking! :yikes:

Bruce,

Perhaps put the pcv in the back of the manifold & run hoses from the back of the v.c.'s to the vapor cannister, turn it into a puke tank? Does your Cad have a vapor cannister? Or run a nice pair of after market breathers. Main deal is where to put the pcv valve. Also, how will you put oil in it?

I have a few ideas on the vent and PVC hook ups, think I will use the small metal rectangular breather can that Cadillac used between the driver side valve cover and the side of the air cleaner base. Should keep the stock look, I think Caddy may have been the only user of that part. Would like to get a fresh new one but have never seen it listed as replacement part, anyone have a lead or # on this?

My air cleaner base radius is too big for direct fit so I will use a curved hose and hook into one of those plastic side filters. I found 5-6 nice precurved hoses on an engine laying it a mud puddle at the yard, one should do the trick. I've never seen so many hoses on one engine,(Chevy Vortex or something?)would be a fick'in nightmare to figure them all out! :yikes:

For the PVC think I'll drill in the intake side of the pass cover and install one with a 90 degree TO, it will have a slight angle down toward valves, think this should be enough for back draining. :scratchchin:

Think I will spring for a face hole for the oil fill, looking for something maybe cast and finned to match the covers, or I just could pull the breather can and use a good funnel.

Got the hood on today, and guess what, some interference. :censored: Not sure how bad yet, because I can't get the rear of the hood to go all the way down even with every thing off. Think the hinges have to go down some more but can't see where, they fit in a stamped trough area and have adjustment slots. Maybe I have them canted, seems like just a little bit off results in alot of misalignment! Once I get it to close properly, I will check the air cleaner system, will be close but I knew it would be, but hoped for the best outcome. lol

I removed the sound mat and will go without one. Looking at the hood underside, the subframe has a nice 18"round stamped opening one would think fits over the air cleaner. But this thing is about 7-8" off from being centered on the carb, :yikes: guess it's just for show or maybe they didn't want to change old tooling. I could have used the 1" or so it gives for clearence.

Getting to the point I'm beginning to wounder what the hell I'm doing, but if I set in the car for a few minutes :cloud9: the feeling passes.

Bruce,

Here is a pic of underhood cutout that Shawn did for a large air box and stock hood.........

My cowl hood solved my problem....

Well, Doc, I guess were out of luck....it didn't work as you can tell. Sorry :jack:

OK....I snaped a digital copy from a throw-a-way camera photo that I have. Wasn't able to scan and transfer :eyepopping: :D So the clarity isn't to good.

To make clearance an extreme drop base was used. Yes, he has a Holly. I made the drop base air cleaner bottom work on a Q-Jet. Made a slot for it to work for a Q-Jet where the secondary air dam lincage (spell) in the drop base........By the way........your car is looking choice

Ron , thanks for the effort, did the modification keep the stock lines or was done without cutting hood surface? Always liked what you and Shawn did with your CDV's, just trying to be the third car thought of when the '77-79's are brought up.

Been taking weekend off, trying not to think about the few problems needing to be solved to get this car running, hope Monday AM will give fresh outlook!

After getting hood rear fit solved, will work on air cleaner clearance, been looking into cutting the large subframe hole in front to center it more. Also maybe cutting the cleaner base in the front, if needed ,which would result in a canted look, I know I'm close to getting the hood to close, but yet so far away. :scratchchin:
