'79 CDV: 425 out 500 in!

UPS guy dropped off package this morning, my carb back from Holley after almost 2 weeks, don't know what they did to it, but I put it back on the car and it runs much better. :screwy:
Went for afternoon drive and the car idled so much better than before and no stalls off idle. Got some practice in for the burn out video.
Will need to get someone to film it, might have to make a run down to Olympia to get a few more miles on the engine and see if Ted could do the camera work. :jack: Guess I better call him first.

Bruce,

Thanks again for all the kind words, one of the good things about this forum.

Got the March issue of Popular Hot Rodding a few days ago, they are requesting reader submissions for " in project cars" for Aug '10 issue, issue out Jun '10. I thought is was about time something other than a Chevelle, Camero, Mustang, or some other car that's been done a hundred times. :puke: Although I appreciate and respect the effort that has gone into these cars, you like to see something different occasionally.

I'm going to put together the package they want for submission and will ask any others on the forum to consider doing so. We need to get some Caddies or Caddy powered cars in the issue. :fu:

They say all entries that have a decent cover letter, good infor sheet, and 10 or less pictures will be published, shouldn't be too hard to do this. The car doesn't have to be finished, just show some credible effort toward. Info on page 13 March issue, deadline is Apr 2,2010.

Maybe a new thread should be started on this, will see what feedback indicates, would like some other cars to join me in this.

Bruce,

Just a update post to show I'm not dead or close to it yet. :worried: Been working on getting ready for paint. Since it's been a cold spring here :grumpy: have been waiting for it to warm up, thought an over night air temp of atleast 60 would be better for drying- but maybe not. Think we will get a few days this week of 2-3 straight warm days, hoping.

While sitting around I found myself doing somethings I might not have done other wise, I've always hated the rear filler strips so I decided to fill them in. I know they may( or will) crack out, :scratchchin: but for now I'm going with the filled in look. Just doing what Cadillac should have done in the first place.

I used good quality material, Evercoat Rage and their spot filler, prepped and degreased, and block sanded my ass off, I think they look sooo much better!

Planning on spraying epoxie primer at the house myself, sanding out and final prep then a reprime and finish paint in rental booth by a painter I traded old 425 engine/trans to.

Hope to be ready to go to a local show that I've worked at a couple of years, Jul 11 th.

A few pics of work and my badges mounted.

Bruce,

Very nice project.
I never really liked the rear bumber filler strips either. On my 75 years ago I had a older gentlemen in a newer car rear end me squarely while stoped at a stop light, pushed me threw the lights . he turned left and kept going. No actual hard bumper damage to the cadi but his car had parts of the front end left in the road including his licsense plate. He pushed the bumper in a and to my surprise the gap was all but gone between the bumper and car. I decided against pulling it out. Just backed against a phone pole at my friends house that his dad had installed for there TV antenna to equal out the 2 sides to match. painted the area in between black to match the car. Looked ok. His dad worked for the electric company. I thought it looked better after that.

I always wanted to do that on my old 75 eldo. Just pull the 5mph mounts and hard mount the bumper and get rid of the fillers. I sold the car before I got around to it though.

Just looked at the very latest Popular Hot Rodding and lo and behold, a certain 500 in. Coupe DeVille :yikes: Really should have been a full feature, the car and builder deserve it.

Congrats Bruce, John

Must be the August issue, they said it would be out 6/22 guess you got early peek? :eyebrow: Will be on the lookout for it.

Bruce,

Another Sunday in Seattle, WTF :cursing: we're into a new record for not reaching 75 degrees or higher, seems like summer came and went and I missed it!

Didn't get paint booth reserved while waiting for it to warm up a little bit until Jul 2-4th, might be just as well, might hit 70 by then.

These delays left me with time to do more than I ever thought about on the body.
It was very clean and straight. It had only one bent fender/wheel opening, easy to fix.
I filled in the rear filler strips and cleaned up the trunk gaps and leveled all the surrounding lip/trunk lid, that area looks about a 1000% better!

Have moved to the hood and front fillers. Just going to do one filler and tighten gaps( will be harder than the trunk) have had some problem with the hood fit, but I don't care what I have to do to the SOB its going to fit right! :irked:

As I said the body was clean and straight but when you do a long block sand out you start finding areas that you can't see or feel. My body/paint guy came over to see how things were going, and said good but not there yet. :mischievous: It's alway interesting how you think you're doin so good but someone or some sunlight tells you other wise.

This is the first car I've ever had painted, so I've been doing some of the things you read about in all the mags but until you actually do it you don't know how it will go, kinda like building the engine. The work I'm doing could be done by a shop but it would cost an arm and maybe a small leg, just just hope what I'm doing is correct and will add to the quality of the paint job. Will know in a few weeks.

Bruce,

Well, summer has hit with a vengeance here in the south.
Already triple digit heat indices. For 2 weeks straight.
Usually doesn't get like this til mid July.

Making up for the extra cold winter I guess.

Might be the jet stream dipping too far out if seasonal patterns, :jack: guess we have to live with it.

Bruce,
Got mine yesterday. Looks good and definitely unique among the others. Way to get some good press for the Caddy Bruce!

Bruce: When Parker and I did his El Camino in black, we learned all about the looks good---oh---not right here syndrome. The best thing we did was use high build primer and then lightly spray it with guide kote--black spray paint--and use the block. That black stays where the valleys are and really gives you an idea of what you have. Great work,

Maddog

Should be nice to have more engine clearence and shouldn't need A/C in Seattle all that much, it doesn't hit 90+ very offen.

Bruce,

With regards to the weather, you may have jinxed yourself with this statement Bruce.

FWIW, I would gladly trade you our recent string of hot, humid (but no rain) weather for some of your cool stuff.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Charles, you're right about the block sanding dance, started using the guide coat this week and it shows up stuff you didn't know you had. Mines' not going to be black :yikes: so I can slack off a little.

John, Ron, Eric read article today, a few interesting cars but like always mostly Chevys and Fords, but that's what one would expect and that's OK, one nice '72 Pontiac Gran Prix. Got a few new ideas from some of the cars.

Maybe I should resubmitt a new photo package after the paint job and after alot of other detailed work, ie welded up exhaust. The car will look about 10 times better that the photos sent in for this article.

It would be nice to get a feature layout, not because I think my car is so great but just to get something different covered. Popular Hot Rodding has covered some different large cars this year but no Caddies. With the current work I'm doing on it it should raise the level up a notch or two, as it stood it wasn't quite there to rate consideration for a full article.
