What Is up with the giant ads here? I don't remember there being any this morning.

FF, STORE-MINDER, WHAT IS UP WITH THE ADS??

Darius and a host of others are wondering …...

Any light on this? The ads make the page load 2-3x slower now...

Gentlemen,

We have a problem, or at least from my perspective we have one. Your mileage may vary, but for me I'm starting to feel used, pimped out, by the owner of this forum. Past forum owners were participants in this crazy hobby of ours. They built and drove Cadillac big Blocks and posted along with the rest of us. When time came for money to support the forum they dropped the word and portions of us would drop a check, or a PayPal donation for the general upkeep of the place. We, and those previous owners were not about monetizing everything. That seems to have changed.

I'm not against the profit motive and free enterprise. I am a past small business owner and I got paid for what I did. I am still an author and a presenter and I get paid for those contributions. But for me there are places where I go to get away from the ever present, in your face, oppressive adverting that has become so much a part of our current culture. Money, profit, monetizing “this, that and the other” regardless of anyone else's views or desires should not be the norm of the day. Sorry, but that approach bothers me.

On this forum WE, you and I, are the product! We are the commodity being sold. It is our presence, our projects, our pictures and writing, our cars that fill the pages of this forum and I feel we've been "fondled" without permission, our private space intruded upon without any "please, may I, or how would you feel about my adding some advertising?" Call me simple, but I'd prefer to be asked before being "fondled."

This forum legally belongs to FF but WE are the day to day contributors, those who provide the content. I would have been nice to have been asked directly - either for financial support, or for our opinions, before having been sold out to the advertisers. I KNOW the drill presses I've recently looked at, I KNOW the suppliers of square tube for exhaust manifolds, I can make my own decisions about what I look at, decide to buy or not buy --- and do not need a constant reminder by someone else's desire to sell me something!

There, you have my view. I do enjoy this forum, its members and their many contributions. My hope is that we can all continue to feel at home here.

Best,

bro. d

Perfectly said...

Now, you should see the adverts this I see up there lol......

Hey guys. I hear you. Unfortunately, it's out of my control. We're being hosted for free so the server owner is using ads to pay for whatever: bandwidth, drive space, software licensing, whatever normally has costs.

If you'd like, I could ask him to setup a program where anyone who wishes to donate to the ongoing costs does not see any ads.

Or, you could simply use an ad blocker. Then all the ads would be gone for free. Let me know what works best for all of you.

I haven't had as much free time as I used to but I'll subscribe to this topic and check in later.

I would have no issue being a "supporting member", as long as the cost is reasonable.

For the record, and as a FACT, I would be happy to become a "supporting member" just as Bro. kzhurley indicated, as long as the cost is reasonable! :cautious:

Jus sayin!

bro. d :geek:

+1 for another member willing to support, I ain’t got much but I’m more than happy to pitch in and keep this place going advertisement free.

Couple of questions come to mind though:

If we all as members support the site and the information within, are we just paying for us to not see the advertisements?
Or would this go to the greater goal of making it advertisement free for all registered members where your casual browser would still have the advertisements?

I will pass this on to him.

I'll see what he says but my guess is the no ads option will only be for supporters. There will only be a few supporters and he's already mentioned charging a low fee of something like $5 per month or $30 for a full year.

Just a heads-up for you guys:
The advertisements continue with no counter offer from the server host. Frankly, I for one have not just rolled over in acceptance. YMMV,

bro. dCADDY FORUM ADVERTISMENTS CONTINUE.webp

Here's what I got...

Sorry, guys. My fault. I've been given the go-ahead to implement a system for $5 per month to remove all ads. I started but ran into an issue and with family over for the holidays, have fallen behind. I'll have it up and running early this week.

FF,

First, thanks for the follow up.
Secondly, I await hearing from others on the forum to determine their interest in being 'advertisement free' - and at what cost.

At first blush those numbers seem skewed in favor of the sever host, but I have zero knowledge about the cost of such things, whether that amount would be par for the course , low or high. Still, my guess is that $5.00 per month will be more than many here are comfortable with; and since we do provide the forum's content a lower number would likely be more acceptable. But, again those are my views.

It's time now for others who have a dog in this fight to speak up - or to forever hold their peace. :lipsaresealed:

I now pronounce you ….. whatever. o_O

The Right Reverend,
bro. d

(Let da church say, Amen) :D
