Gentlemen,
We have a problem, or at least from my perspective we have one. Your mileage may vary, but for me I'm starting to feel used, pimped out, by the owner of this forum. Past forum owners were participants in this crazy hobby of ours. They built and drove Cadillac big Blocks and posted along with the rest of us. When time came for money to support the forum they dropped the word and portions of us would drop a check, or a PayPal donation for the general upkeep of the place. We, and those previous owners were not about monetizing everything. That seems to have changed.
I'm not against the profit motive and free enterprise. I am a past small business owner and I got paid for what I did. I am still an author and a presenter and I get paid for those contributions. But for me there are places where I go to get away from the ever present, in your face, oppressive adverting that has become so much a part of our current culture. Money, profit, monetizing “this, that and the other” regardless of anyone else's views or desires should not be the norm of the day. Sorry, but that approach bothers me.
On this forum WE, you and I, are the product! We are the commodity being sold. It is our presence, our projects, our pictures and writing, our cars that fill the pages of this forum and I feel we've been "fondled" without permission, our private space intruded upon without any "please, may I, or how would you feel about my adding some advertising?" Call me simple, but I'd prefer to be asked before being "fondled."
This forum legally belongs to FF but WE are the day to day contributors, those who provide the content. I would have been nice to have been asked directly - either for financial support, or for our opinions, before having been sold out to the advertisers. I KNOW the drill presses I've recently looked at, I KNOW the suppliers of square tube for exhaust manifolds, I can make my own decisions about what I look at, decide to buy or not buy --- and do not need a constant reminder by someone else's desire to sell me something!
There, you have my view. I do enjoy this forum, its members and their many contributions. My hope is that we can all continue to feel at home here.
Best,
bro. d
