I bought a set of Olds rods resized and worked from Potter.  He's out of the office for a few days  I think, so I was wondering if anyone can give me a quick answer on this.

The olds rods, on some use an extra hole in the center, where the cap mating surface is.  I think this is to squirt oil up towards the camshaft, is this correct?
If this does squirt oil, do you have to then pay attention to the orientation of those rods?  For instance, there's 3 out of the 8 in my set with the holes.  Depending on which cylinder bank I put them, the squirt will go towards the cam, or it will squirt towards the underside of the cylinder.  I'm thinking this would be bad to point at the cylinder, might cause it to burn oil.

Anyone put the Olds rods in recently that can lend advice???

thanks
Andy

The rods need to go in with the oil spurt holes toward the cylinders. If I recall correctly the tangs for the bearing inserts will be on the opposiite side. Also the bearing is usually offset toward the middle, nearer to the other rod than the outside.

The bearing tangs on this set is on the same side as the oil spurt holes.
You're right on the bearing offset, they are offset towards the middle of the journal.  When I put them with #1 rod in #1 cylinder, with the bearing offset in the correct direction, the spurt hole is facing the "wrong" direction however (oil hole faces away from the center of the block).  Is this oK?

Or should I put #1 rod in the #2 cylinder of the caddy block, and basically swap the #1,3,5,7 cylinders as far as the rod marking goes?  I think the Olds motor has 1,3,5,7 down the driver's side, whereas the caddy is down the passenger side.

Thanks

When I use the olds rods,I put them in "backwards".Oil hole away from center.Works fine...the low comp engine in the T has 'em that way,no sweat.

Ok thanks guys.

Terry,
Did you keep #1 rod in #1 caddy cylinder then when assembling it?

If that's the case, I have to flip the pistons on the rods as they are backwards right now.

Andy,
I know that the standard "olds rods in a caddy" procedure is to install the rods so the bearings are offset toward each other on each pair of rods. However, it looks to me that even with the spit holes to the outside, and the bearings offset away from each other [on each pair] the bearings will still not come anywhere near the crank. Check it out.

No,I ignore the numbers and just put 'em in the way I want.I think the numbers on mine are facing in so you can't see 'em.I know the offset of the bearing shells is toward the center of the journals in mine-that's the way I like 'em.By the way, some bearing shells have the oiling notch in them and some don't.Might matter on the Olds, but in a Caddy no problem either way.
