hey guys, maybe ted, what do you all think is the widest tire size i can put
on the eldo,i of course have 235/75/15s now and a spare set for all the
crazy burnouts but what if i really wanted traction?

Just don't go crazy on us and go to 22 inch rims.

Do you have enough power now to require bigger tires?  Still waiting for the first drive report.

I think I would look at 275-60-15.  These would be 27.9 inches tall where your current tires are 28.8.  Also add about 1.5 inches in width.

You may be able to go more but the hard part is finding a tire that is common.

Or you could go with a wide white in 255-70-15 that is exactly as tall and would look pretty cool.  http://store.coker.com/search.php?mode= ... =255/70R15

Here's a tire calculator for you http://www.project33.com/tiresize.cfm

just so you all know,i will never get rid of the factory mag looking hubcaps and i should have it by the weekend
the custom exhaust is almost done, the guys ended up using a dual in dual out magnaflow it is almost the same
size as the big transverse eldo muffler and i am worried it still may be real loud because you could see straight
through the thing!i will post pics and chassis dyno reports when i get it back.

BF Goodrich makes a 275/60/15 drag radial, if you need traction there you go.  How wide are the wheels we're talking about here?  The BFGs specs say 7.5" minimum width.

I have been running 255x70x15 Firestone Firehawk/Indy 500 on my '76 for about 4 years. I get great tire mileage, great wet and snow traction, and the dry traction is wonderful.

I will agree with Ted on the  22 inch rims but what is wrong with a reasonable reduction in sidewall width and a little bigger diameter wheel ?

Would give it a more.....I dunno modern/contemporary look if that is what your after.

As long as it doesnt have the "donk look" or the "spinning 22's" and can support a bigger heavier car why not ?

The bottom vehicle being the "what not to do " picture.

I agree with what JW said. Matter of fact, I was planning on getting a set of those Marauder wheels (top pic) for my Grand Marquis. Only problem is tires are wee bit expensive. Larger diameter wheels to modernize your ride are perfectly ok (not 26s). Tire cost shouldn't be a problem if the car isn't a daily driver and considering you're not burnout crazy,  or if you have money falling out of your butt. For older cars, I've decided not to follow the trend and stick to 15 or 16" wheels.
