Was Wondering What The Most Commonly Swapped Motor Was For The 429...

Just a little somethin i can throw in until i get the 429 in prestine condition!

350 maybe??
would i need to swap tranny as well? or would the same 3spd work

The 429 has its own pattern, so a different engine will affect the trans too. But its going to be a big effort to put any other engine in there. good luck, Bruce Roe

One of the EZer engines to swap would be the Cadillac 472 or 500. All you have to do is to modify the engine mounts so that the engine is about 1.25 inches forward and it fits pretty well. You can also stay with a TH400 transmission although the one for the 429 will not bolt up. It would be best to buy the engine and trans from the same donor car if possible. Swapping to a 350 Chevy would require a LOT of work and lots of custom brackets and crossmembers, etc.

IMHO unless you are just hung up on keeping the car 100% correct you would be a lot happier with a nice 500 in there.

While it might take a little extra work to do it in the first place the power that can be had is uncomparable.

a 500 would be nice to throw in,
however my idea was to get a chevy to BOP adapter plate && deal with the mounts.

from some in depth research would be to go with a c454 or the c350
get the sizing pf the pipes & run dual exhaust out the rear into fishtails

I ordered a service manual to determine the vacccum lines because everything else is a peice of cake (brake booster, fuel pump/lines, ect.

another idea would to find a nice 429 that actually runs for a decent amount...
until then i would rebuild mine && throw somethin else under the hood & make it a sleeper ha ha

im almost certain there has to be some sort of adapt kit to take out the 64's 429...leave the th400 and put in something else...
the tranny is strong we just need a little something more power wise

There s no adapter made to switch that odd 429 bellhousing over to a regular BOP or Chevy pattern.

If your going to swap it out you either have to get another transmission or cut the bellhousing off and use a

JW Ultra Bellhousing, which is BOP & Chevy, but then you can never take it back to 429 Cadilaac again.

I wouldn't waste my time with the Chevy engines. If you truely want a sleeper put a 500 in there.

That 4.300" stroke crank will you you loads of torque for very few dollars spent.

Just find yourself a clapped out old Cadillac and pull the engine, transmission and start driving it.

A 350 Chevy in that boat of a car will run really poorly compared to any big block.

Big cars need big engines

I have a friend in Charlotte NC that is trying to sell his running 429 Cadillac and switch pitch tranny from his '65 Cadillac. He works for NASCAR and is doing a real high dollar custom rebuild with a LS7 all aluminum F.I. engine and 4L80E tranny plus a lot of other cool stuff including a NASCAR rear end. This engine for sale is the original 429 with about 70K on it I believe.

Go to http://grou.ps/65_66cadillaccommunity/talks to see the post he made about selling it if you are interested. His name is Richard.

Cake? That's funny. Engine mounts? Oil pan issues? [is the 429 a front sump?] Then there is the bolt pattern issue.

I don't intend to sound like an ass, but if you need a service manual to figure out the vaccum lines, and you don't know how to disconnect the "yolk" [yoke, btw], you might want to re-think this whole thing.

That deal from EZ looks like your best bet imo. Besides, the '64 transmission is a 1 year weirdo, and his '65 is not, and is a "switch-pitch" trans. That's a good thing.

To answer your original question: Imo, the later 472 and 500s are probably the most common swap candidates for the older Cadillac cars.
