I always have built my own transmissions I dont know how much the current 4l will take

Since I ain't gonna be doing 7000 rpm shifts esp atleast with boost that does raise the limit. ..

I dont really buy some of the hype on trans upgrades and have done internal pressure mods to this one already

I know the input on 400's breaks around 1000 from Sean's motor
He went to HD last I know

But most will tell you much less so does anyone know??

A 1500hp 4l80e is like $6000 from the looks of it

Ati transmission are $9,990

Howdy,

6L90 look perfect !!

Why not have a 6 speed that can take more than a TurboHydro400?

There is also a new 10 speed joint venture tranny for GM and Ford, but I hate Ford, so can not recommend that Tranny

More HorsePower and Better Tires,
Bro Rogelio

PS... The Rossler Tranny is also solid

Beside Greg I dont mind spending money on Cadillac parts ...

The 10 grand ati wants for just the trans is more than I'll have in the entire bottom end of my 567..

Including new hyd roller and lifters
From Cadco

And I already have the heads .

waisting $$$ on stuff I build myself just to have bragging rights or big advertised stuff i.e hi po parts is just plain DUMB

6 speed would be nice ... not familiar with 6l90

I looked at Rossler site and they dont list pricing

I was thinking of switching transmissions maybe not this summer but over next winter when the turbos go on

0765E34E-64D4-4F87-9A72-9DFABB6F7F05.webp The 10L90 tranny from the ZL1 also looks beefy? Can you imagine a 10speed automatic tranny rowing gears behind a Big Block Twin Turbo Caddy ?

Just sayin’

Yeah, good luck with the newer transmissions. They have internal TCMs and even GM hasn't really figured out how to program them correctly. The 4L80E has all the gears you'll ever need for a torquey engine like a BBCad and they can be built to take the power. In terms of ultimate strength the newer stuff will fall short.

I agree with MIHELA.

Splitting the flow of power with multiple gears benefits engines with limited power, or where design parameters have created peaky power. That generally isn't the case with a big block and certainly wouldn't be the case with 567 cubic inches, turbo charged or naturally aspirated.

Cad Man, I've NEVER attempted to build an automatic transmission but I did watch every step as I had one built for another vehicle.

If you have the experience indicated, I have little doubt that you can rebuild your 4L80E to the same level as the performance shops; and save a grundle in the process. As with most things, success has to do with choosing the right components to meet the job - and then taking the time in putting things together.

Best,

bro. d

I would look onto some of the builds the diesel guys are doing with them.. I bet your torque will be right up there and they make them live behind 800ftlb torque monsters

Yea I wouldn't want s 8 or 10 speed and Cadillacs certainly this one dont and wont need them ..and there inability to handle this kind of power.. another reason I dont buy the new hp and vehicle weight ratings

I already had doubts about newer than the 4l80e

Torque N.A with 9 to 1 will be over 800 on boost who knows 1800 ft lbs?

Y'all need to look around a bit.

8L90E 's are holding 650hp and 650 ft lbs of tq, factory.

LT4's out there are producing over 1K HP with an 8L90E behind them with just a converter.

Those transmissions are probably close to maxed out. The 4L80E is just physically larger which means if you put the latest and greatest like Aermet shafts in them they will be stronger. 2000 HP should be possible.

Many Gen-5 Camaros with turbos or other big adders and installing 4L80E after they blow up their 6L80E.
Part of the issue is the critical tuning - as I understand it, a tuning mistake can apply two gears at once, destroying the transmission.
GM is moving as fast as it can to their new 8 speed.
thanks.

I have this reply from Century Transmission :

Our Stg 5 4L80 can handle up to 2500+ hp. Our best (Stg 2) 6L80 is rated to 1100 rwhp."

I am sorry you did not take this for the humor intended. Since I can never tell your moods perhaps I shall refrain from responding to any of your posts. Perhaps that might be best.
As far as doing the work, I believe EVERYONE on this forum who is legit does as much of their own work as they are capable. You are right, I don't work. After close to 60 years I decided it was time to retire and enjoy myself/. Sorry if that does not meet your approval.
Keep the faith

Sorry man, the 8L90E dwarfs the 4L80E in weight and power handling. They also have an external TCM, so easier to swap.

Someone else said it, it's all about the programming now, but they have the 8L90E behind factory engines producing more than 755hp and 715ft lbs of tourque in the Corvette ZR1 with the LT5 in it.
