A couple months ago my 73 SDV had been sitting for a few months . So I tried to start it with a low battery . I pumped the gas pedal a bunch and tryied starting it . The engine tried to fire but then "bucked" back , you know ,,, when the engine rolls backwards . So I put a good battery in it and it started up but made a knocking noise that sounds like a wrist pin . Now I've never actually heard a wrist pin knock but I've been told it is like a double knock , and thats how this sounds . Well any ways I figured I musta pumped to much gas in the cylinders and that cuased the bad wrist pin . I few weeks later I started the car and drove it in my back yard to jack it up and see if the noise was cuased by a cracked flywheel . I didnt see any cracks . While driving it in the back yard I noticed it was very low on trans fluid , but no puddle where it had been sitting , and it was VERY low . So any way before jacking it up I added fluid and everything seemed ok but still had the knock .  For one reason or another I started the car up while I had one side jacked up and the knocking noise went away . After inspecting the car I drove it back around to the front of the house and there was still no knocking noise . A couple days later I started the car back up and the noise returned . So whats my problem . If it was a wrist pin I dont think jacking the car up would have change the noise . Does this sound like a bad torque converter ? Do they do what I discribed ? Thanks . You got to get a better idea where the noise is coming from...Is it loudest under the hood or under the car?  I like putting a hose to my ear and moving the other end around to hear where it's loudest... I had a broken end clip on a rocker that made a funny noise that would come and go... untill it fell off...

How about a broken return spring on the fuel pump?  I just drove home the 75 I just bought and at times its got a loud clack that comes from the front of the motor its not deep plus too slow for something on the crank.  Its not from under the valve covers, cant think of what else it could be.

Reminds me of loose torque converter bolts or loose starter - maybe cracked starter nose piece?

Kicking back would be sure way to break the starter nose.........

Whats confusing me is why the noise went away when one side of the car was jacked up  The starter is ok . I dont think its the fuel pump . You can tell the noise towards the mid-rear of the engine . I listened through a long screw driver and still couldnt pick it out . We,re having bad weather now so I cant get to bizzy on it now . Thanks . BooBoo

What about a loose torque convertor bolt or a cracked flex plate. Take down the inspection cover and have a look...

Or overfull on oil. I had the "new" mark on my dipstick in the wrong place when I switched pans. Oil was foaming from being overfull, causing a lifter to make a racket.

I had the same exact noise in a 500 after sitting for a couple months, it was really loud. It sounded like a wrist pin or rod knock. It was a colapsed lifter. After changing the oil and letting the engine get hot the problem solved it self.  :twocents:

Heres a update . I havnt done anything to the car until today . All I did was take the valve covers off and start it up . Now there is no noise . Its a nice warm day today , sunny and about 70 , ya reckon it was just a stuck lifter ? Anyone got any ideas for a additive to use with the oil ? Slick 50 , Marval Mystery Oil . Thanks . BooBoo

I wouldnt waste money on additives, just change the oil (and filter) as often as you can afford to and have time to for a while.  The additive pack in the fresh oil will flush a lot of crap loose.  If you want to give it a boost something like seafoam, atf, or some sort of motor flush stuff just before the change will help but you have to be carefull with that stuff becaue it may loosen the crap up too fast or loosen up weak gaskets and seals that are being held together by the sludge and goo.

Well it turns out you guys were right . It was a lifter . Man I've never heard one make noise like that . I changed the oil and I haven't heard it since . Everything seems fine . Thanks for all the replys ! BooBoo

Saw a 500 and a 425 -both had been quiet, -then after sitting for months they sounded shot. Oil pressure was up so they ran them gently till they quieted  and are ok/ running today.

My brother had an '85 Crown Vic with a collapsed lifter - sounded like a small hammer hitting on top of a metal work table. I've never heard one that made a knocking noise  ???  I learn something new every day (or try to anyway).  I'm glad the noise cleared up and you didn't end up having to replace the lifters.
