Hello

Im still relatively new to the Cadillac game, but i was cruising the junkyard and cam across a 78 Toronado

did a bit of research and if im correct, came with a th425.

Is there anything different about this tranny or will it bolt up to a 70 eldo engine?
and is there anything else that will switch over from that car?

(seats perhaps?)

I do believe the transmission and final drive are the same but I think there is a different bracket/mount that attaches the final drive to the engine/mount. I think the bracket that holds the drive shaft extension is also different to mate with the olds block.

What are you trying to do?

On the Eldorado the transmission were weaker in 77-78 than they were in 68-76.  Don't know why but I can tell you that I seen a lot more 77-78 with bad transmissions than the early ones.  I pulled a 78 out the other day that worked great but the oil looked as black as engine oil and I have a couple more in the lot that don't work.  Even the exchange book say they are a different number.

I would try to find a early one.  I have a few but I'm also in Olympia WA.

Hmmm

looks like it is more trouble than its worth, i was just curious to see if it was worth picking it up as a spare. (really don't feel like working for a few hours in a muddy field )

Up here in Toronto/ Hamilton area i have yet to see an Eldorado on the road or at the wreckers,

I'm just hoarding parts when i can. thx for the quick reply though

I would guess because 1977 is the year they went to the 425, which I'd guess produced a fair amount less torque than even the castrated 1976 500.  Perhaps they dropped the torque capacity of the transmissions more than engine torque decreased?

A good part of it is they went to plastic thrust  washers for ease of assembly.
they don't hold tolerance for long and then everything goes to hell.

If you need a trans, I have a th425 that came out of a 71 El Dorado. 32K miles on the ticker.

You can have it for the cost of shipping and a bottle of wine. Might even be able to ship it cheaply through nhgpnut on this board.
