I need to open or hone wider a Cadillac crank snout to use with a degreeing wheel. How can I do that when I dont have a machine shop handy? Doesnt have to look pretty since it will never be used for it real purpose again, only to be welded to a crank bolt device.

Maybe cut/sand a key down and glue it into the slot for the procedure and use an old set of stones on a spring loaded three stone hone?

Another option might be the saw through the hub lengthwise in one spot. that might allow the hub to spread a tad and slide on/off w/o too much effort. I'd probably cut through at the slot.

Charles-

If you have a die grinder and sanding rolls like used for porting heads they will do the job. So will a carbide burr in the die grinder. Be aware that the sleeve seats on the crank in two places and that the two places are different diameters  :screwy: .If you have your machinist hone it be sure to tell him.... :cursing:

Oops. Didn't know that they were different diameters. I'd split it for sure then.

I have had some luck with hardware store flapper wheels that fit in a drill.  I needed to open up an old bearing race to make a poor-mans set-up bearing.  It was a small bearing so I used my Dremel fitted with a small flapper wheel.  It took a while, but I eventually got there.  If you can't find a good match on the diameter, you can use a slightly smaller wheel and walk it around the ID.

I would definitely fill the key way.  I don't now if the shafts on the flapper wheels are long enough to reach all the way inside, but it is worth a shot.
