Ok... so I have a 94 SLS.  I bought it and it needed a radiator.  Replaced that, brand new.  Car overheated and lost coolant out of the overflow.  Bought a new cap, that fixed it.  Drove the car 300 miles, had no issues.  Then, all of a sudden, I cant drive it very far at all because it overheats again.  I'm thinking its time for a new thermostat and fan switch.  Problem is, I dont want to start tearing it apart without knowing where the parts are.  So....

I have no idea where the fan switch would be?  Any help?
Also, I'd imagine the thermostat to be in the water pump housing.  Correct?  Wrong?

I would buy a shop manual, but I dont plan on keeping the car more than a few months.  Financially I need to sell it as soon as I get my other cars put back together.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you all in advance.

I would run a compression test (see if you have problems with a head gasket),  and pressure test the cooling system.

I would hate like hell to pull those heads off though if the gaskets are bad... damn threads in the block pull out.

Compression is fine.  The head gaskets were done like 6k ago.  I'll test the cooling system, but there are no leaks.  I think I just need a thermostat because there was a lot of crud in the old radiator and it sat for several months before I got it.  Dont know where the thermostat is located.

I cant find a shop manual for the car, in person, so I cant just look at it to find out where components are located.  I would hate to part out damn near perfect body because of a cooling issue...... but If I cant drive it, I've gotta get my money back.

I dont know where the stat is either and I dont have any books that new.  I have worked on them but not just a stat so I dont recall where it is.  Many public library's have free access to ALLDATA which is the info software most service people use.  All you have to pay for is what ever you want to print.  You can also get a DIY subscription and get it online but its like $20 a year and only lets you look at one car per year per $20.

Do you know who/how the head gasket was done?  I have seen some of these motors where the head bolts do not appear to take the threads with them so the mechanic does not do the timesert kit on them and the gasket leaks again in no time.  Most of the time the threads come with the bolts so its a bit more obvious that it needs to be done but again I have seen where they just helicoil the ones that pulled out which does not do much good.  Anytime the head bolts come out on these things you pretty much need to do the full timesert treatment.

Wikipedia did answer my question.  Thanks.

Sadly though.... the thermostat didnt fix my problem.

I replaced the radiator.  The thermostat, the coolant overflow cap.  Compression checks out fine.  All the temps seem to be running where they should.  And yet, it'll say "engine hot" and start purging the coolant.....  :crying:
