Cadillac has long been synonymous with quality, style, and reliability but that doesn’t mean that they are alone in the minds of consumers looking for a great vehicle. The STS has some tough competition with some big names as well, names such as Infiniti and Volvo! The STS has two main competitors, the Infiniti M35 and the Volvo S80, both of which are great vehicles, but Cadillac fanatics would contend that the STS is a step above both. While the STS, the M35, and the S80 are all made by different manufacturers, their prices are very similar. The STS retails for right around $41,000, the M35 for right around $42,500 and the S80 for approximately $39,500. Though there is a bit of a difference, when you are talking about luxury cars this really is very little and not enough that would keep one consumer from considering all three cars if he or she did not have all the facts.
Though the vehicles are similar in price, they are all powered by different engines. The Cadillac STS boasts a 3.6 liter V6 engine that produces 255 horsepower, the M35 is equipped with a 3.5 liter V6 with 280 horsepower, and the S80 is powered by a 2.5 liter I5 engine that provides 208 horsepower. Each of the engines have four valves and have somewhat similar displacement and compression ratios, though they are not by any means identical given that they are all different engines. The front suspension of both the STS and the S80 are strut design and the M35 sports a wishbone front suspension, while each of the three sports a multi-link rear suspension.
Despite the fact that all three vehicles are powered by different engines, their fuel economy is quite similar. The Cadillac STS gets about 18 miles to the gallon in the city and 27 miles to the gallon on the highway. The M35 is a bit less efficient, with 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles to the gallon on the highway. The S80 rates slightly above the other two with 20 miles to the gallon in the city and 27 miles to the gallon on the highway, owed to less curb weight than the other two vehicles compared here. Because fuel economy is so similar, this likely will not be a deciding factor between the three vehicles.
The wheelbases of the STS, the M35, and the S80 are not identical, but are definitely comparable. The STS measures 116.4 inches, the M35 measures 114.2 inches, and the S80 measures in the shortest at 109.9 inches. Wheelbase is not always, but can be, a great indicator of interior space and comfort. Each of the three comfortably seats five, though the STS provides more headroom and rear legroom than the other two vehicles. This can provide more comfortable passenger room for kids or backseat passengers.
The Cadillac STS is a rear wheel drive vehicle while the Infiniti and Volvo are both 4×4 wheel drive vehicles, and this is a big difference and a selling point for many. ABS brakes are standard on the Cadillac, Volvo, and Infiniti, as is a vehicle stability control system. While they have these things in common, neither the Volvo nor the Infiniti are as stylish, reliable, and as well known worldwide as the Cadillac name, and that counts for something.
