Hey man.. I know these aren't quite what you're looking for, but if you're not dead-set on the earlier valve-covers, I've got these up for sale/trade..

Did anyone ever check out the valve covers Don Zig was selling, may have been made by someone else. They are a finned style cover, inspired by EARLY cadillac engines. And by no means am I trying to sell Marty short. Also seems like one of our english friends posted build pics w/ eelco early cad covers but I've no Idea how room-ey they'ed be even w/ adapters. Hope this is of some assistance.
Thanks for the reply. the bottom pict, finned ones, were the ones i was looking at. i also believe that those are the best looking for my vintage looking 49. i do have a set of chrome, 4 hole VCs for the 331 engine that i was going to use, but these just look 1000% better. i have other means to pour oil into the engine, so holes would not be necessary in the VCs. i have a set of adapters and was planning to use them with those finned caddy VCs. do you happen to know how much grinding and were it was needed to make them fit?

Sorry kids, been out in the garage grinding valve covers ....Mario, the valve covers are very nice but the area along the sides going down to the top holes need to be clearanced a little to use studs, nuts and washers instead of the very small Allen head bolts supplied. In all fairness I will admit that I didn't have the Felpro VS 5392 vc gaskets before I tried installing them nor did I know that the cork/rubber material was about 1/4" thick. This might have saved some grinding but a little would still have been necessary. In all I probably took 1/16" out of the ends of the vc's and 1/8" off of the ends of the rocker shafts. The alum. rocker stand/base was beveled as hopefully the pic shows (if I can resize it) until it cleared. As you can imagine with the cost of these parts I was VERY careful in what I did. This "adjustment" has in no way compromised the integrity of the valvetrain as I never got into the countersunk holes at the shaft's end........close but still virgins.
Since I installed the pcv in the rear of the single plain intakes floor I still have to make tubular vc breather stands so I can mount the breathers on both vc's .....still working on that and I hope this narrative explains the steps I took to gain the clearance. Also as Marty eluded to, I have the vc adapters, obviously w/o them none of this matters.............sorry for the delay, Dave
Can't really see much, I blended it out as good as I could. 90% of the mods were to the shaft and stand. You can sstill see alittle chicken scratch on the vc, but when the vc gasket is in place it clears.
