Right now it is a mess. I didn't get out on it today. I printed out a bunch of articals on setting it all up and I got on the site and posted about the thread sync the distributer. It
did bring up a question and right now I'M waiting to see if they answer it. It has to do with the Ignition reference angle. My sniper is set for 45* and in that artical it said for GM HEI and Ford FTI use a reference of 10* Gonna see what they say.

Dang it! Sorry for the trouble that came with that test drive. At times those things seem to come in droves.

Its a good idea to see what answers come to our "angle" question. In the meantime have a beer on me!

I had two beers on you1:rofl: Yesterday it was raining so I didn't get out on it.The sniper ran great by itself so i know its all in the distributer. So far I have found 6 articles on how to find the reference angle and they are all different:( The biggest thing is that the ecu uses that reference to tell the sniper what to do. If it's wrong the rest is off.And this is to get back to where it was before I " tuned it":confused::laugh: I just had a bad day!

Today was a much better day!!:) I put everything back as I first had it. Then I went back thru it and reset timing and inductive delay properly this time. Engine sounds great in the driveway,Revs up good, no missing, timing on handheld advancing, Everything looks good! Now all thats left is THE TEST DRIVE!:) will it crash and burn?? Going to find out AND this time I'm gonna bring my phone!:laugh:

First I ought to ask if you’ve made any progress on the timing issue??

After visiting the Holley Sniper forum I see where you’ve posed your ignition question there and received several replies. It appears there is a basic incompatibility between Sniper electronics and the magnetic pickup of the GM HEI distributor.

One solution offered by Sniper forum members was that you buy a Holley HyperSpark distributor but you correctly pointed out that Holley doesn’t make one for the Cadillac.

The second solution was for you to buy a Pertronix Hall-Effect module for your distributor - but once again you’ve probably found what I found which is that the Pertronix unit is made to replace a “points type,” not an HEI.

Based of what I’ve read your timing problem is probably linked to your current HEI distributor, which was giving you crazy reading even before you switched to Sniper FI. So, what about picking up a Cadillac points-type distributor and applying a Pertronix module to it?

Bro. d
Why not find the appropriate distributor that has the same dimensions as the Cad and get that one? Have a Pont. mag and was told to just change gears. Guess what? Wahlaa! Cad Mag.

First the GREAT NEWS
The car runs smooth with a lot of power. I had set the timing at 34* WOT and I think I'm going to try 36* .With the mechanical advance in the original dist I had it on 36* and it ran great so going to go to that setting , real easy with the handheld monitor. Havn't driven it enough to see how the cruise at 44* will work. Supposably with the Holley sniper software you can bring up varius items like the logging by the sniper and can see what is happening on your PC. I think I got it down on making a custom fuel and spark curve for the 500. Have not tried it yet for a simple reason I am scared:(:laugh: that I will mess UP the setting I have. I was told I can save the old one rename it so I know which it is and can go back as needed. The holley site says it the best way to really get the engine running great.

You say a Pontiac dist might work? If this distributor the caddy HEI doesant work out , I have a distributor out of a 1997 vortec 350. The dist has a crab style cap and the dist is a hall effect
style which is the good part ,the bad part is I dont know if the coil I have with it is useable so I would have to get a correct style coil, change wires to fit cap and get a collar to set distributor at the right height. I think the HEI will work out Okay for now but that is an option for the future.

NOW the BAD news :( My starter crapped out and barely got it to turn over enough to start at the gas station It is a barely used gear reduction hitachi:( .
Time for a mixed drink this time.

Open liquor stores were essential in Illinois to ensure that everyone voted, and voted OFTEN!!!

You forgot. Vote early and after. Also make sure your great greatparents vote also. Along with their friends and reletives. But most of this is in Crook County.

Another update and question.

On the starter it's a gear reduction hitachi. A while back before the sniper ,I had the quadrajet flood and make a mess. Then when I attemped to start the 500 and it backfired and ate the flywheel.
I replaced flywheel and went to the sniper to get away from the carb nightmares. The starter looked ok so it went back on. The other day test drive nightmare not only turned slow it sounded like it was
breaking teeth. I checked it out today. The flywheel didnt loose any teeth but on some it rounded the ends off some, not on the end but on the lenght of the teeth.None are missing. I watched the starter
engaging ,not starting the engine but just spinning the engine. The starter gear drive is hitting the teeth to engage and the shaft is moving out from the flywheel popping over the teeth. I havn't checked the starter but it seems the bearing inside the starter is maybe damaged from before. So I'm going to replace or fix the starter.

Now the question. Should I repair my gear reduction starter,Buy a new gear reduction or try the original style ? I have a normal high torqe starter under warranty which I going to go replace and test it anyway and if it works ok for this time That will be it for now.But if it doesnt ? I found out why I was burning starters up.(very bad connector at the ends ,they are all soldered up great now)
Should I try the starters at cad company? $$$

Sounds like you have a handle on things. I would rebuild the starter myself then make sure its still not doing the same thing. I've enjoyed tour thread '49

You might also want to check your ignition timing when cranking. Under idle rpm the ignition could be retarded to something like 4* to keep your engine from kicking back and make it easier for the starter to ''get it going''. That way an oem style starter won't have any issues getting it running.

The sniper can be set for whatever cranking timing and then a timing for idling and then WOT and one for cruising, pretty neat.

I replaced the gear reduction with a hi -torque GM original style. (it was free) cleaned ,cleaned all my connections and replaced the cable from the starter to the ford style solinoid. That one had the insulation burnt
off,not touching anything but had wire showing. So I checked everything again, battery at 12.7 volts and spun it over! The engine started very easily.Took it down the road for a 30 minute ride and the car car ran great. Nice smooth off the line at easy throttle and lots of tire spin at a more aggressive throttle.:) I loved it. Went on back to the house turned it off and waited a little bit and hit the key!:(:crap: The engine barely turned over. The alternator was suppling 14.2-14.4 volts. So i let it set then went back out (after a beer with thoughts of another one when I went back in.) to do some checking. Battery showed 12.7 volts.
Put my volt meter on it and cranked it(tryed) voltage dropped to 4.5 volts:(. So I guess my next move is a new battery.

Is there a go-fund me setup somewhere for caddy -corvair owners??:rolleyes:
