I've seen a rear axle under a number of older rwd cadillacs, including the '73 hearse I used to have. The pinion is weirdly offset, and I've only seen that style axle under cadillacs. I can't seem to find any information on it when I've looked at various times previously. I'm assuming it's strong as hell given that it comes in heavy cars with big engines and doesn't seem to break very often. Do any of you guys know anything about it, size of ring gear, ratios, what it might be a derivative of?

You are correct. Those are "Cadillac Only", and they are exceptionally strong. Problem is available ratio gears for the say 66-76 rear ends range from 2.78 to 3.21 and their controlled differentials are rare as hens teeth and really not suitable for extreme use. I looked and looked when I wanted to go to something for my car and ended up going to a Moser 9" with 3.70 gears and trac-loc. Took the mounting tabs from my cad rear end and "glued" them on the 9".
