Since I am going to be running a manual transmission and using the Flywheel from Cad 500 parts , just wondering if there might be any clearance problems if I do the dual oil feed mods to the back of the block
that Greg Surfas had talked about several years ago?

Oil in verses oil out.

Thank you for that. I was going to dig around and look for your mods also . I am a firm believer in having a large dia. on suction/Feed side of pumps. I like your pressure Reg at the end of the line, much better way to control pressure. Just like my fuel systems in the race cars. I will spend a lot of time screwing up thin wall tubing until I get the 7/8" pump pick up tube right. Never had to bend thin wall before.

Woolf aircraft . Thanks for that ref. I will call this coming week and get some bent mild steel tubing. .875" ID . What radius shall I order and what did you find to use as a pickup screen ? I was looking in McMaster carr for round wire screen mesh of diff dimensions. Screens keep out debris but also are a big restriction. This is not a Race engine but will be flogged at the dragstrip often and will see lots of high speed long distance driving. I will be spending a bit of time on the cooling system , (water and oil) engine, trans, and diff. The pan will be a cut and welded steel pan that started life as a Mid sump as that is all I can find right now. Pump will be a smoothed out Melling unit. I would love to go with a Titan but I am trying not to go hog wild on the spending.

I made pickup screen housing front 2.5 inch exhaust tubing. I installed 3/16 opening screening. I have magnets welded on pan sump. Verne Schumann oil pumps has a paddle wheel pump design. Articles on internet under paddle wheel oil pumps. Shows scallop cuts in driven gear. Also shows other gear pump gear with small center drill recesses on gear ends. LS small blocks oil pump out front with long pickup tube. A 1.250 o.d. tube is manufactured by one of the oil pan manufacturers. One LS pickup tube screen looks like 1/4 inch holes. I did all the mods to oil system to find what worked for me with compcams endurx mech roller lifters. I bushed the lifter bores with bronze bushings with .040 oil holes. I made up jig and used reamers ground by Denny Weydendorf. Bought speed controller for 1/2 electric drill from harbor freight. Even with .040 holes the amount of oil that goes up push rod is a torrent. Straight 50w cold at start idling fills the bulldog valve spring area up to nearly over flow with valve cover off. Best way to weld the over size .875 I'd 1.00 od tube is wit 1" ID tube to keep weld out of tube ID flow area. If your going mech roller lifter use the endurex pontiac 455 lifter with ford 460 link bars. The pontiac 455 lifter has oil holes parallel with the roller wheel. Chevrolet endurex will line up with cad500 oil passage and since theirs no paddle valve on the roller lifter it will pump all the oil into the valve covers. 16 direct holes to oil pressure. OK that's it for now.

Piddle valve not paddle. It s like a check valve that meters the oil.

I cut entire front sump pan off flange. I've found plenty of front sump pans. I leave rear seal and front cover seal from 1/2" in front of #1 main bearing cap intact and leave approximately 1 3/4" of side area along length of pan and fabricate square pieces for deep rear sump. The mid sump from 425 is very shallow in front. Cad500 stroker crank rod bolts will make slight contact. I slotted a Mid sump converted to rear sump from Larry Kruzik. The 2"wide slot is along botton of front of pan from front main cap to rear sump area. A 2.250 exhaust pipe is cut down its length to cover the slot. 1/4 off length of slot is bent up towards rotating assembly to function as a oil deflection baffle to direct the oil into the tube that's welded along the slot. There's a picture on this site. I can't get my current pictures loaded on this forum site.

This is my first Cad (far from my first engine) and trying to keep it simple. boogie man heads , Olds 7" Rods from (can't remember his name) . Stock 500 stroke crank custom .050" pistons from Racetech/Autotech (10.0:1). Hope to hear back from Mike Jones next week on my solid Flat tappet cam and his choice in lifters. I still need to drill the back of the crank to put bushing or brg in for the 6 spd. tremec. I deffinately have concerns on getting the oil system right. I will build my own headers . Longevity and powerful tractability is the goal. I really appreciate you sharing this info. Thank you.

I foundway to resize photos to send to this site. Cad500 rear sump 8qt oil pan with 1.125 I'd pickup tube with BigCaddo oil modification.

This I call the BigCadoo oil mod because it's completely my idea. Notice the bronze insert where factory oring was located. Then the oversize flange. Its any fellow cadders to use for their Cad500 engine project. It enlarges the entry hole into oil pump. Oil in vs oil out.

In that picture the factory oil port hasn't been oversized yet. Don't use a drill bit as you may crack the thin area near crankcase. Use rotary files / die grinder and contour hole to size.

Save $$ for hydraulic roller or keep that factory camshaft core to very safe numbers. Save the mental sweat. That's the worst kind of sweat!

Another oil modification. Adjustable oil pressure. 3/8- fine thread into Allen taper plug with orange seal under nut.

Another oil modification is the reserve pressure vessel canton manufactures. Set the electrical control valve to dump the reserve pressure at full throttle with micro switch on carburator secondary linkage. Also Titan uses dual pickup feeds on many of their oil pumps. Oil on vs oil out.
