Does anyone have a 500 distributor laying around to take a measurement on? I would like to know the distance from the base that touches the engine block to the bottom of the teeth on the gear. Thanks in advance

Can do. It would be helpful if you could wait until tomorrow (Monday). You say.

Yours looks to be 5-7/16". Mine is a MSD distributor and it is just under 5-9/16". It has a couple of spacers, one of which is around 0.100". I also notice that yours has a smaller wear pattern biased toward the bottom of the gear. Mine is dead center of the gear and a much longer pattern. I have a $129 MSD wannabe distributor coming and I'll see what the distance on it is and how it is shimmed. I think it is too deep. I did pull the distributor gasket and put the distributor back and the housing goes clear to the block so it's not bottomed out on the oil pump. I'll update soon. Thanks for the help guys.

What is the difference between a Chevrolet distributor gear and Cadillac gear? Same number of teeth. Same outside diameter. Same body length. Same overall length. Same tooth pitch, or looks identical anyway. Same dowel pin hole size and location. Same tooth shape. When installed on a Cadillac distributor, it meshes all the way into the cam gear. I didn't start it up, but I just looked in the corner this evening and thought that the Chevy gear looked a lot like the Caddy gear. Any input?

They are the same. I am using a Lunati "Bronze" gear on the end of the DUI HEI (set up to trigger my MSD AL-6).

I apologize for being late - by THREE DAYS!!!
(excuse to follow)

The distance that I measured from the bottom of the distributor mounting flange to the bottom of the drive gear is: 5.5 inches (give or take 0.003).

That would coincide with what Greg got - basically. My reading was taken with a dial micrometer.

Now for the excuse: With my wife now working from home what WAS the computer room, where I did all of MY research and correspondence, has become HER office. She is working longer at home than she did when going into the downtown office. That leaves me little time, generally in the evenings (why lie? All the time in the evenings) to get my stuff done. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

LOL. When my wife started working from home I lost my reloading room. I feel your pain. Thanks for the measurement.

Are you setting up for a sniper controlled timing? A sniper can run a gm HEI with the coil in cap dizzy.

Chevy gear along with the correct shim to put it back like the above pictured measurements and it’s fine now with a correct wear pattern after 500 miles.
