Starting at $101,300, the Cadillac XLR-V is the most expensive Cadillac to be manufactured from the company to date. With its introduction, Cadillac is continuing its competition with very high-end, European luxury brands. The XLR-V is stacked and it should be, considering the six figure price tag. It boasts of a 4.4 L supercharged V8 engine with 443 hp, automatic transmission that is electronically controlled, manual maneuvering without a clutch, Magnetic Ride Control, performance brakes, 19 inch wheels, Intellibeam headlights and much more.

This luxury roadster is fast! And it’s 4.4 L supercharged engine is responsible for that. The XLR-V takes only 4.6 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour. This is an incredible 1.2 seconds off of the original XLR’s acceleration test.

Owners enjoy amenities like a retractable roof, Bose sound system with personal surround speakers, touch-screen DVD navigational system with voice recognition, keyless entry, Magnasteer steering, leather, Zingana wood accents and headlamp washers. It comes equipped with a windscreen designed to keep out wind noise, premium carpet floor mats and a custom vehicle cover to keep away dust and dirt.

The two-door, two-passenger, 6 speed convertible is an automatic with a overdrive. It gets 14 miles per gallon on city streets and 21 miles per gallon on the highway. Cadillac is looking to become competitive with the likes of Mercedes Benz, BMW and even Lexus. To that end, they have been developing the V-series. All “V’s” must go from 0-60 miles per hour in under five seconds.

The XLR-V has made some cosmetic changes in 2007. Both grills, upper and lower are wire mesh. The hood is more sculpted. The exhaust tips are stainless-steel and the aluminum wheels are 10 spoke with a finish of sterling silver. To achieve better handling, Cadillac designed a bigger stabilizer bar in front and added a stabilizer bar in the rear.

To deal with the increased pressures and temperatures created by the Roots-style blower, Cadillac made big changes to the XLR’s powerplant. This means they dropped displacement from 4.6 liters to 4.4, made the components bulkier, added a new block and plus heavy duty pistons. In these ways the XLR-V is very similar to the STS-V.

The Magnetic Ride Control is something to behold. It processes road and wheel data every millisecond. The XLR-V now has two settings. The first setting is one made for comfort and is very similar to what is included in the standard XLR. The second setting is made for more aggressive driving. The gearbox, is very smooth when driven as an automatic and in manual mode.

Cadillac took some pains to improve the brake functioning of the XLR-V. The brakes are sure, smooth and very strong. This is especially important considering the increased power of the V. To accomplish this, Cadillac engineers used brakes that are basically identical to the ones found in the z51 Corvette. These J55 brakes have bigger cross drilled rotors and brake linings for hard driving. Rear rotors are 330 mm, while the front rotors measure 340 mm in diameter. Both rotor cheeks have been made larger for the purpose of increased thermal capacity. The V roadster uses single-piston calipers in the rear and dual piston calipers in the front.

As the price would denote, the XLR-V has superior handling. This is due to the Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) – which has been adjusted for the vehicle’s power and speed. The MRC works to ensure that the car’s body is even at all times. This ensures for a comfortable and smooth ride. The Hydra-Matic 6L80 six speed automatic transmission is used for the first time by GM in a rear mounted configuration. The Hydra-Matic uses both an integrated transmission controller and clutch-to-clutch operation to ensure that shifting from one gear to the next is smooth.

The XLR-V is the most expensive Cadillac to date. It’s the third install of the V-series which features  Cadillac’s most high-end, high-performance fleet. The price tag of $100,000 may be exorbitant for most individuals. However, if you’re in the market for a car of this stature, than you’ll find all the amenities  you’d expect: superior handling, speed, power, a high-end sound system, a navigation system, keyless entry, luxurious interior and a host of other great features. Cadillac customer service is also one of the best in the business.
