The Cadillac STS-V is the most powerful Cadillac ever manufactured. From the push button starter to the supercharged engine, the STS-V is a piece of American machinery to behold. It’s an upgrade from the standard STS and gives the Germans a serious run for their money in the high-end luxury performance sedan market.

Perhaps the most significant upgrade to the STS-V is the supercharged Northstar engine. With a powerful 4.4 liter V-8 which puts out 469 hp as well as 430 ft lb of torque, it’s very quick. The size of the cylinder bores were decreased 2 millimeters and the engine block was changed to die cast, which vastly improved the vehicle’s fatigue strength. A decreased compression ratio, brand new cylinder heads and an incredibly powerful engine control module are other notable changes.

The STS-V works hard to balance power and fuel consumption. It’ll get adequate gas mileage and provide plenty of power for the performance-oriented driver – running from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less then 5 seconds. However, in acceleration tests without roll-out, the STS-V is clocked a little slower. Roll-out provides the vehicle with about a foot of movement prior to when the clock starts. General Motors and many car magazines time vehicles in this manner, so it’s industry standard. With roll-out, the STS-V has been clocked as low as 4.9 seconds to 60. Without using roll-out, this time may increase a little bit to 5.1. It mainly depends on the driver.

Starting at $77,090, the STS-V was designed to compete with the BMW M5 and the Mercades-Benz E55 AMG. The latter two vehicles have ruled the 4-door performance market for the last twenty years. The Cadillac STS-V proves to be a formidable competitor. It feels fast, but the acceleration can feel a little jerky to a driver not accustomed to the kind of power this vehicle has on tap.

While the STS-V is notably powerful, it’s also very smooth and easy to handle. It gives you exactly what you would expect from a luxury performance sedan. Sharp handling, and thanks to a magentic suspension – a smooth ride. The power oversteer allows you to control the vehicle with simple flicks of the wrist. Steering the STS-V never feels sloppy or out of control. It feels as if you’re driving a much smaller car.

During its design phase, the STS-V was tested on race tracks and even on the Nurburgring in Germany, perhaps the most challenging race track in the world. This was to ensure that the handling was top notch and that the car would perform well even at high speeds. In one test, the STS-V beat the Mercades by 5 miles per hour in an agility test.

One of the most impressive features of the STS-V is its braking action. Cadillac uses Brembos for both its front and rear breaks – 14 inch rotors in the front and 14.3 inch rotors in the rear. The 4300 pound sedan can come to a halt in only 122.4 feet from 60 miles per hour. .

The vehicle is rather pricey starting at around $80,000, one of the most expensive Cadillacs on the market. However, it’s not intended to fit everyone’s budget. The price includes a $2,100 tax that you’ll need to pay due to the vehicle’s gas guzzling status. However, if you’re in the market for a high end luxury sport sedan, you’re probably not all that concerned with gas in the first place.

Pricewise, STS-V is actually very competitive. In fact, it’s nearly $5,000 less expensive than the BMW M5 or Mercedes E55 AMG. It comes standard with a moon roof, domed hood, rear spoiler, 10 spoke premium wheels (19 inches in the back, 18 inches in the front) and a front splitter. Inside the vehicle, you’ll find a leather lined interior, suede on the seats to help keep you planted and wood/aluminum trim.

The supercharged Northstar 4.4 L, V-8 engine provides a great deal of power, but still maintains excellent road manners. It’s quiet, smooth running and not harsh by any means. It’s difficult to beat for highway and city driving, but the price tag of $80,000 puts it out of reach for most of us. However, for those who can afford it will certainly enjoy it’s power and exclusivity…
