O’Connell and Pilgrim show well at Elkhart Lake

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – 06.28.2015 – Cadillac Racing drivers Johnny O’Connell and Andy Pilgrim finished seventh and 12th respectively in the last of three races at the Pirelli World Challenge DeVilbiss Elkhart Lake Grand Prix presented by Cadillac at Road America.

Starting from his 15th place qualifying position, O’Connell (Flowery Branch, Ga.) was able to get a good start until just 20 yards in front of him the track was blocked forcing him to completely stop his No. 3 Cadillac ATS-V.R. He was able to squeeze by next to the wall and slot back into 15th position under caution on the first lap. Teammate Pilgrim also had to avoid the blocked track from his 19th starting position on the grid. When the race went green on lap three the Cadillac duo began to move up through the field. By the time the next yellow flew on lap 10 O’Connell was in 11th and Pilgrim in 13th. In the waning laps, O’Connell was able to get by the Acura of P.D. Cunningham for seventh with Pilgrim coming to the checker in 12th.

“Our standing starts are always exciting,” O’Connell said. “Sometimes you have to improvise. It is scary when you are getting going and then there are cars stopped on the track in front of you. I think I pushed a six-foot wide car through a five-and-a-half foot wide space using the wall a little bit. I am proud of the Cadillac Racing team. I had a great handling Cadillac, I just didn’t have the power to match the top guys this weekend. We improved each race and we are still somewhat in the championship hunt.”

Pilgrim had a better car today.

“I had to check up on the start when the track was blocked just in front of me,” Pilgrim said. “I lost a few positions because of it, but I didn’t hit anyone and no one hit me.  It was a good run with what we had this weekend. The lack of straight away speed is pretty ridiculous.  We lost a good bit of practice time on Thursday and that may have cost us a little on the race set-up. On to Mid-Ohio.”

The Pirelli World Challenge Series race from Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network Sunday, July 5 at 2 p.m. ET.  The series will travel to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course July 31- Aug. 2 for a double header.
